About Sydney + New South Wales Regions
Sydney was founded on 26 January 1788, when the First Fleet arrived to establish the penal colony of New South Wales, and officially became a city in 1842.
Sydney is one of the largest cities in the world covering 1580 square kilometres - that is the same size as London and more than double the size of New York!
One in five Australians live in Sydney. Sydney’s population of almost 4 million come from a diverse range of cultures - with people from 180 nations and speaking 140 different languages!
Sydney also attracts as many visitors per year as its population! These visitors are well looked after - with Sydney recently voted as "Best City" for three consecutive years by two leading international travel publications.
