With a population of 1,477,800, Perth is Western Australia's largest city and also its capital. Although first settled as a "free colony", in 1850 the settlers faced many difficulties and had to accept help from Britain in the form of convict who built many buildings including the Perth Town Hall, Government House and the Fremantle Prison.
