Hobart is the capital of Tasmania. Founded as a penal colony in 1804 Hobart is the second oldest city in Australia. Today the city has a population of over 245,000 and apart from the many other industries here it is a port for Antarctic operations for both Australia and France. Hobart is located on an estuary of the Derwent River in the south east of Tasmania and the CBD is on the western shore adjacent to Sullivan's Cove. Inner suburbs are spread out along the shores of the river and up the hills at the foot of Mount Wellington. The Port of Hobart takes up the entire area of the original Sullivan's Cove.
