If you have a Working Holiday Visa, a Tax File Number (available from
Tax Office) and are wanting to work in Western Australia for a minimum
of 6 weeks, then go to www.workstay.com.au
The most available work for "travelworkers" during the summer and spring
times, is in the horticulture industry ie vineyards, fruit orchards, vegetable
gardens, plant nurseries etc. If you are a registered nurse or qualified
accountant the prospect of work in Perth is good. Some other professions
and trades can be in demand around the Perth metropolitan area. Country
pub work for barmaids (females), is very popular. Blue collar temping
agency work is available but (generally) need to have your own transport.
Probably the only way of finding unskilled work around the city , is
to knock on doors. The more doors you knock on the more likely you are
to be in the right place at the right time. You also need to promote yourself
effectively. Mind how you dress, how you approach prospective employers,
sell yourself and make sure you can leave them with your contact details.
You must be contactable! A cell phone is the only way (as long as it is
switched on). Make some calling cards on the word processor, include you
name and contact details and leave with everyone you speak to. Resumes'
are usually a waste of time and resources. If a prospective employer really
wants one, then call back with it. Don't be afraid to revisit of keep
in touch with prospective employers or agencies. Be honest, though it
doesn't hurt to colour or expand you experience and or abilities. Be fair
to employers by letting them know how long you are available for and give
them notices when you plan to leave. By being considerate in this way,
you are helping future Working Holiday makes - what goes around comes
around!
And finally, be negotiable! Remember you are only a Working Holiday Maker,
the most casual of the casual, and there are 100's of you all looking
for the same job at the same time. Be creative, sell yourself and be persistent.
