Before settlement by the British, the area was home to the Kaurna Aboriginal People. Founded in 1836 and named in honor of Queen Adelaide the city was a planned city for free settlers only. The city, located in close proximity to the Torrens River, was designed by Colonel William Light and was designed in grid form with wide streets and public spaces. Adelaide has been referred to as "The City of Churches", Adelaide is the capital of South Australian and is also known for its many festivals, arts and culture and the wine industry.
